After any snowfall, the 100-inch dome shutters must be cleared of snow before they can be opened, or the snow would fall inside on the telescope below. This is done by climbing up the outside radius ladder of the dome and manually shoveling off the slit. Depending on the depth of the snow (and the available help) this snow removal can take a few hours or several days.
